EDITORIAL: Japan-South Korea ties should stay the course for improvement
Japan’s relationship with South Korea has improved significantly through a series of positive steps taken by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol.
This progress should not be limited to the rapport between the two leaders. Both countries need to make steady efforts to solidify and deepen their bilateral relations.
Last week, Kishida visited Seoul and held talks with Yoon. The two leaders confirmed their countries’ commitment to continued expansion and enhancement of bilateral cooperation and exchanges.
They also signed a memorandum of mutual cooperation to protect the citizens of both countries residing in third countries.
Previously, ties between Tokyo and Seoul had deteriorated to what was described as the worst level in the post-war period due to historical and other sensitive issues.
However, they have taken a remarkable turn for the better after Yoon, upon taking office two years ago, began to pursue a foreign policy focused on mending the strained relations with Japan.
