The Asahi Shimbun announced a new lineup of veteran writers contributing to its popular daily column “Vox Populi, Vox Dei” starting on Oct. 1.

Editorial writers Fusako Go, Koichi Furuya and Norio Yatsu are now on the roster, replacing Toshihiro Yamanaka and Tetsufumi Arita, both of whom had been writing the column since 2016.

Go, 56, served as chief of the newspaper’s Manila, Rome, Jakarta and Sydney bureaus. As an editorial writer, she contributed to the weekly columns in the Asahi titled “Taji Soron” (Views on various issues) and “Nichiyo ni Omou” (Thoughts on Sunday).

Furuya, 56, is well-versed in China. During his fourth stint in Beijing, he served as chief of the newspaper’s Chinese General Bureau. He also headed the Shanghai and Shenyang bureaus.

Yatsu, 51, had long worked for the City News Section in Tokyo. He was twice assigned posts in Okinawa Prefecture and served as chief of the Naha General Bureau in the prefecture. As a senior staff writer, he contributed to the “Taji Soron” column from May through September.

Yamanaka has been assigned to be director of the Editorial Board, while Arita joined the list of writers contributing to the “Nichiyo ni Omou” column as a staff writer covering cultural affairs starting Oct. 1.
