Rugby World Cup was good dress rehearsal for Tokyo Games

Olympic organizers’ decision to move the 2020 Tokyo Olympic marathons and race walking events from the Japanese capital to Sapporo has raised concerns about the planning and management of the Summer Games.

Particularly troubling is the disarray among the Tokyo Games organizing committee and the central and Tokyo metropolitan governments that came to the fore afresh in the process leading to the decision.

The clock is ticking. The parties involved need to act swiftly to build mutual trust so that they can identify and tackle effectively all challenges they will face in the run-up to and during the Summer Olympics.

First of all, the parties involved should try to learn and share relevant lessons from the experiences of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

World Rugby’s showpiece event, which unfolded at 12 venues across the nation over a 44-day period, attracted more than 1.7 million spectators including more than 400,000 visitors from abroad.

In contrast, the Olympics will last only 17 days and almost all the events will be held in Tokyo and the surrounding areas.
