JOC chief must respond clearly to allegations in bribery probe

44 4 1

French legal authorities have reportedly expanded the investigation into Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda over allegations about possible bribery related to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics bid.

The bribery allegations against Takeda, who served as head to the Tokyo Olympic bid committee, have continued to haunt him. In addition, they threaten to sully the glory of the event because he has failed badly to make sufficient efforts to dispel the allegations and ensure sound governance of the organization.

Takeda’s behavior in the news conference he held in response was appalling. After reading out a prepared note denying the allegations he ended the news conference after only about seven minutes without taking questions, on the grounds that he was still under investigation.

His refusal to answer questions was criticized by many foreign news media, not to speak of domestic ones.

At the news conference, Takeda apologized for creating a situation that could have negative effects........
