Collingwood football legend Tony Shaw tweeted a photo recently with the words, "This is my amazing grade 5B teacher Mary Cox. Unfortunately she is not well. She had an amazing impact on so many of her students. Even when not well today she was worried about my welfare and family. I will never forget you, Mary."

The teacher opens the student’s eyes and mind to the possibilities of the world.

Shaw, in his thanks, touches on a power that's often invisible but enduring. It is the unbreakable thread that can form between teacher and pupil. The teacher opens the student’s eyes and mind to the possibilities of the world. Of worlds within worlds: literature, science, maths, technology, history. The student may not know it or appreciate it at the time, but their world has changed forever.

The thread can remain a private matter, or it can become public by virtue of the pupil becoming a master in their field.
