This is the first instalment of a series called What Women Could Learn From Men. Actually, it's a short series. Indeed, this is the only instalment.

Also, the lesson itself is quite short. It goes like this: "Understand that you look fabulous."

Men have had this self-belief for millennia. We know we look good. Really good.

An ageing man of my acquaintance, OK it's me, will often dart into the shower in the morning, hair askew, belly flapping, eyes rheumy from last night's shiraz, and, catching a brief sight of myself in the mirror, will think: "You know what? Not bad. That's not at all bad."

The phrase "he's still got it" rises before a million mirrors, each and every Australian morning, the words coming from the male mouth whose "damn fine" visage is being reflected.

In some cases a short riff of air guitar might be also be performed while still half-naked in front of the mirror, just to thoroughly settle the argument.

Meanwhile, over in the Nation of Women, the eyes dart from one body part to another before settling on the one body part which is found to be the least attractive. Before a million mirrors, a different phrase arises: "Oh what am I going to do about my puffy........
