Muscat's successor must address Asian failure

Whoever replaces Kevin Muscat at Melbourne Victory coach will not only have to win the A-League.

A priority will also be to find a way to somehow make Australia's biggest club competitive in the premier continental competition, the Asian Champions League.

Victory were unable to give Muscat a fairytale finale on Wednesday night when they crashed at home 3-1 to Japanese club Sanfrecce Hiroshima, the defeat once again underlining the all-too-regular gulf in class between Australia's finest and the best from Japan, South Korea and China too.

The big screen at AAMI Park rolled footage of Muscat's greatest Victory hits as the departing coach saluted the crowd one last time.

There was video of him scoring goals, converting penalties and lifting trophies.

There was further footage of Muscat, this time wearing a suit, shaking the A-League championship trophy aloft after leading the team to another title.
