Excellent start for Socceroos but tougher tests await on road to Qatar

A Mathew Leckie double and an Aaron Mooy drive from outside the area gave Australia a 3-0 win in Kuwait City in their opening World Cup qualifier against the Arab nation.

It's the first step on a long and arduous road, but it was taken with purpose, intent and confidence.

In World Cup qualifiers it's axiomatic that a nation has to win their home ties, and picking up points along the road is also vital.


Australia could not have got off to a better start than this one, with three goals inside the first 38 minutes all but wrapping up the tie before the interval.

Graham Arnold had made a rod for his own back with his bold prediction in the lead-up to this game that the current squad of players could become the best Socceroos team ever – better even than the golden generation who took Australia to the World Cup in Germany in 2006 for the first time in 32 years.
