A rugby man in the football state: Liberals cling to hope in 'the Massachusetts of Australia'

One thing Prime Minister Scott Morrison won't be doing in his quest to save the Liberals' bacon in Victoria is adopting a football team.

"I like AFL, but I'm not a phoney," the diehard rugby league follower told Melbourne's 3AW radio on Monday. "I'm not going to around pretending something I'm not."

But he's trying in other ways. Over the past two months, Morrison has spent more time in Victoria than in Queensland - which has been regarded as the key battleground state at this election.

Now he has started the first full week of the campaign in Melbourne, spruiking his economic credentials and using his $4 billion budget war chest, the Urban Congestion Fund, to pledge road upgrades and other projects. That included $154 million to fix the choked Dorset and Canterbury roads in the city's east.

But Morrison has several problems in Victoria. He's an outsider. The Liberals were routed at last year's........
