D’oh-mographics: What Millennials want from Labor and the Coalition |
Politically, I have become Homer Simpson.
That’s not a comment on my waistline. Rather an acceptance that at the age of 34, I’m closer to Homer than I’ve ever been.
Home and Marge are now Millenials.
Dependent on what season you’re watching, the star of The Simpsons is either 36, 39 or 42.
In other words, Homer is a Millennial. A member of the biggest generation in Australian history.
Both of the women vying to be premier of Victoria know this is a group they need to win to triumph in the November 2026 state election.
Premier Jacinta Allan has already promised to be the leader who got Millennials into homes. When she proclaimed this in 2024, she correctly said kids who watched Bart and Lisa now had the worries of Homer and Marge.
Opposition Leader Jess Wilson, 35, was elevated promising to put a new generation in charge. Her leadership team, barring 76-year-old Bev McArthur, are Millennials like her.
Both leaders will pledge to throw the proverbial kitchen sink at these voters. But what do Millennials actually want?
This year, the most common age for an Australian was 34 years old. As one of those 34-year-olds, I will try to furnish Wilson and Allan with some ideas.
Both Labor and the Coalition are right to talk about housing affordability as much as possible. It is the single-biggest policy failure affecting younger generations.
