I am terrible at giving gifts. Can the experts teach me how?

I have a problem that is particularly noticeable at this time of year: I am not very good at giving presents. When choosing gifts for loved ones, I am often stuck for ideas and, even when I do come up with a terrific concept, I often get the execution slightly wrong.

Say, I realise my daughter would love a logo T-shirt. I might buy a great T-shirt, but in a colour she doesn't like. Or, I'll buy the perfect colour, but in not quite the right shape. Or I'll buy a logo I like that just misses the mark.

Of course, I occasionally hit the jackpot, but it’s the exception rather than the rule. And I will watch and marvel as other people consistently get it right, especially when those perfect presents are thrillingly gifted to me.

I suspect being brilliant at choosing gifts is an innate talent. Still, in the hopes of improving my own weak performance, I asked some gifted gift-givers to share their present selection secrets.
