Archer rise a spearing blow for the Big Bash League

Bristol: Jofra Archer has emerged as cricket's next big thing - and potential Ashes hero - only one game into England's World Cup campaign but his rapid rise is likely to be a major blow for the Big Bash League.

Heading into England's second game of the tournament, against Pakistan on Monday night, Archer was plastered across the covers of the sports section of the major British newspapers over the weekend.

"So Jofra, what are you like with a red ball?' The Times asked, pointing to a column by chief cricket writer and former England captain Mike Atherton on why the white-ball specialist could be an Ashes threat come the start of August.

"Golden Archer" roared The Daily Telegraph, declaring the "bowling sensation to join Ben Stokes as England's highest-paid player".

And that's why there will be disappointment for the BBL, where the Barbadian-born English cricketer has made a name for himself with the Hobart Hurricanes.

In new central contracts to be awarded to players come October, Archer is set to receive a red-and-white deal, meaning he will pocket about........
