Great leaders hard to find as those in charge pander to popularism

One of the premises of this me, myself, I age of individualism, is captured in the Soup Dragons’ anthem, I’m Free: “I’m free to do what I want any old time”.

There are only two problems with this sentiment; it is wrong and it implies we are capable of making good decisions.

Nothing in this life is free, every creature from ants to humans form social organisations governed by rules of operation. Think about that when next you are sitting in nothing but your underpants watching the world go by, only to be asked to get off the bus by the driver.

While it is obvious that we are not completely free to act or even speak as we wish, it is also the case that all too frequently we do not know what is good for us. How otherwise can we explain smoking, Brexit, and listening to Cilla Black records?
