Weitering a top priority for Carlton

Sam Walsh has been the hope of the side in both of Carlton's pre-season games and, while this is only the beginning for him, one can already see flashes of a formidable future midfield in which the powerful Patrick Cripps extracts, while Walsh excels as an inside and outside weapon.

Should Paddy Dow develop as most judges expect and Will Setterfield's body co-operates, the Blues should have one of the better young midfield quartets in the competition. That's without counting the speed of Sam Petrevski-Seton, Zac Fisher and whoever else emerges in the next few years.

But, as impressive as the precocious Walsh has been, there's another pick No.1 at Carlton – and they have enough of them to play a game of tennis doubles – who shapes as far more important to what happens on the field for the Blues this year.
