Gary Ablett's first reply to a difficult past week was in a carefully-worded Instagram post that sought to undo the "like" of an Israel Folau post that created a storm about homophobia.

"I want to make it clear that I love ALL people, regardless of race, religion, gender or sexuality," Ablett posted, praising Folau's faith and explaining why he had undone the offending "like".

His second response, in the face of persistent booing from the Hawthorn throng, was to thrive in an arena in which Gaz is far more comfortable than cultural conflicts on social media - the MCG, against Geelong's great rivals, on Easter Monday, a day of some significant for the devoutly Christian Ablett.

It isn't clear why the Hawthorn faithful boo Ablett, whose family has a considerable legacy at Hawthorn. His uncle Geoff played in two Hawk premierships, while uncle Kevin wore the brown and gold and his uncle by marriage is Michael Tuck. And his mercurial father famously........
