Flying Filipo saves blushes and secures second Wallabies win over Wales

A pair of opportunistic tries from flying winger Filipo Daugunu helped the Wallabies survive a fierce Welsh performance in Melbourne, and secure three consecutive wins for the first time in three years.

The Wallabies kept up their unbeaten record under new coach Joe Schmidt with a hard-fought 36-28 win over Wales, who dropped their ninth Test in a row but gave Australia a massive fright with a spirited effort.

On a slippery night at AAMI Park, Wales played much of the game in the Wallabies half but the Australian side stayed ahead on the scoreboard all night, mostly courtesy of their ability to punish Welsh mistakes.

Daugunu scored his first try in the opening stages at the end of a 90-metre effort, which was started by a chip-and-chase from Andrew Kellaway near his own line. Jake Gordon scored a second in the first half when he pounced on a dropped ball turnover, and scored a solo.

The second half saw Wales dominate large stretches against an often lacklustre Australia, and they trailed by just 23-21 with less than 30 minutes left.

Tries to Allan Alaalatoa and a canny second from Daugunu - where he swooped on an errant Liam Williams tap back in-field from a kick - seemed to seal the game for Australia.
