Too much noise let Freo noose Lyon and get out of jail free

The real reason Ross Lyon was sacked as Fremantle coach is not yet known.

It was definitely in part due to the culmination of several on-field, club-wide failures from skills to recruitment in the past four seasons since the club won the minor premiership then slid abruptly with finishes well off the pace of a successful AFL club.

A winning percentage of 66 in Lyon's first four years at the helm was cut in half to 33 in the last four of his controversial tenure that hurt not only the culture and connection of the entire club but the core of its membership.

Fremantle recorded the biggest membership drop of any AFL club in the past 12 months while cross-town rivals West Coast peaked to an all-time high on the back of an unexpected premiership in 2018. It only made the sting worse for bitter Freo supporters.

Consistency was a key area new football operations manager Peter Bell wanted improvement in when he came on board at the end of 2018, who buoyed Dockers followers with his immediate influence that helped sign Jesse Hogan and Rory Lobb among others during the most recent trade
period.

The Dockers remember had recorded a 50-point average losing margin in the last half of 2018; this season just the one loss was above that number as Lyon and his personnel made significant inroads on-field from the last.

But familiar beatings began to rumble at Dockers HQ in Cockburn once injuries to key planks took hold, losses became latched and Lyon reverted to his defensive ways mid-season. Finals all of a sudden looked like a long-ago sunset not to be seen for ... who knows, given the changing rhetoric on the rebuild since 2016.

Still, consistency was craved and in most part given by Lyon and his coaching staff, before the club was beset by injury. But most within and out of the club expected Fremantle and Lyon to see out his 2020 contract before the pair........
