The excruciating and needless wait for the Tim Kelly trade

The impending departure of Tim Kelly from Geelong dominated the first official day of AFL Trade Period, as it will over the course of the next nine days of this most excruciating period on the football calendar.

Every year at this time, a big name or two in the game will want to shift clubs.

Sometimes the deals don't get done, sometimes they go down to the wire, as they have to in order to appease all clubs involved (the Jesse Hogan trade to Fremantle a case in point).

But the Tim Kelly trade is very different; it's a clear-cut case, yet the player and the club he wants to leave seem intent on making his desired move west as difficult and convoluted as can be.

And it is delaying any meaningful reboot of Fremantle under new coach Justin Longmuir, who was appointed last week and will be at Marvel Stadium with football operations boss Peter Bell representing the Dockers.
