Justin Longmuir was linked to the Fremantle coaching job the minute the club shocked the industry and sacked Ross Lyon in August.

At the time six of Lyon's assistants were unsigned; a staggering number at a club where the senior coach is contracted for next season, and especially given assistants are supposed to have their futures clarified by August 1 as per AFL Coaches Association protocol.

Long before Lyon was sacked, there were fierce calls for more "Fremantle people" at the club.

Longmuir is just that. The 38-year-old returns to the club he played 139 games for on a three-year deal as senior coach, with president Dale Alcock and football general manager Peter Bell adamant his history playing in purple had zero influence on the appointment.

The West Perth product has made a name for himself as an assistant, first at Fremantle (2010), then West Coast (2011-2017) - where he helped Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy blossom - and finally Collingwood, where his defensive nous turned the Pies into the second-best defensive team in 2019.

He certainly deserves his chance at senior level.

But how wide did Fremantle's selection panel cast their net to find the very best coach for the struggling club that hasn't played finals since 2015?
