Let's Make January 26 Un-Australia Day

2 0 1

A lot of us don’t know what to do on Australia Day any more. We want to recognise that this day symbolises more than two centuries of oppression, racism and suffering for Indigenous Australians. But we also really enjoy having backyard lunches with friends and eating that deliciously crunchy cabbage salad with the Chang’s crispy noodles that somehow make cabbage edible. Nobody knows how the noodles do this. Only the Chang family. Maybe the greatest Australians of all.

It’s a real dilemma, which is why I think we need to shift Australia Day to a new non-problematic day – maybe Reconciliation Day on May 27, or any of those regular working days that are sandwiched between a weekend and a public holiday that people are just going to take off anyway so we might as well give them national cabbage-salad holiday-status. And then January 26th can still be a holiday, but we can call it........
