Not an All-Australian team: Bob Murphy picks the team he'd pay to watch

Before Freddie Mercury whipped the crowd into a frenzy before sliding into icy waters at the MCG
for Monday's Big Freeze, he used to play centre half forward for the Saints in the No.12.

Saint Nick and I are firm friends these days, but back in the day, we had a moment on the field that was a little hostile.

They say the quickest way to ruffle a few feathers in football is to pick a team. Invariably, someone is left out of the side or played out of their preferred position and all hell breaks loose.

Writing in these pages a few years ago, I decided to pick my team of favourite players. Not an All-
Australian team, just a team of players I like to watch or find myself intrigued by for one reason or
another.

On the week I chose to unleash my team to the world, the Bulldogs were playing the
Saints and I remember vividly thinking to myself, “I have to put Lenny Hayes in their team,
because, well, he’s Lenny, but I’ll be damned if I’m putting Riewoldt in as well when we’re about to
play them this weekend.”

I picked Jack Gunston at centre half forward instead.

Half way through the second quarter the ball trickled out of bounds between Liam Picken, myself and Nick Riewoldt.

The words exploded out........
