Long before Michael Maguire became a premiership-winning coach, he was an assistant to Craig Bellamy at Melbourne, where he learned many of the mastercoach's philosophies and strategies.

Most importantly, he learned how they defend and how best to manipulate them both on the edge and around the ruck with their attack.

I know it’s a well-worn line but Melbourne are still the masters of the wrestle. They suffocate teams. They make it messy. They manipulate the rules better than anyone.

So, I expect the Tigers to work on the short side, just as they did so effectively in their 30-4 belting of Penrith during Magic Round.

When they are working together, Robbie Farah, Benji Marshall and Luke Brooks are a lethal attacking team. Last week, they killed Penrith, who were diabolical.

The basics of defence on the short side is you have to number up. If the opposition has three players, you must have three defenders. It’s really important the markers do their job. If the dummy half comes out, you can’t bite on him because then it puts too much pressure on that first defender on the short side.
