Swindon voices views on record-high arrests for illegal workers

The number of visits and arrests about illegal working reaching its highest level since 2019 sparked a lot of discussion.

8,971 arrests were made last year, up nearly 59 per cent compared to 5,647 in 2024 – the previous highest point in data published by the Home Office.

One of the most significant operations carried out by Immigration Enforcement officers in recent months took place in Swindon on December 16.

Alongside Wiltshire Police, they visited Panattoni Park, the former home of Honda’s manufacturing plant, and carried out checks on all workers on the site.

In total, 30 arrests were made for immigration-related offences.

Here’s what you had to say on the matter.

Catharine Watson said: “It’s crazy to me that they arrest illegal ‘workers’ but fail to identify the criminal element right under their noses!

“The public know all those vape and barber shops are dodgy but they carry on every day unbothered by authorities; yet the ‘workers’ are marched away under guard! Make it make sense.”

Rob Davey replied: “The person that employs illegal workers should have their business closed down.”
