OPINION: At some point around mid-2017, influencers were cool.

We were in peak Instagram, riding the gluttonous wave of unicorn frappes, softly lit flower walls and skinny white girls selling laxative tea. So much so that, in 2017, the world's first Instagram museum opened up in LA. Which, instead of being a normal museum showcasing something wondrous about humanity, proved how uninteresting humanity is as we paid $45 to get in and take "professional influencer" photos in bathtubs full of rubber ducks.

At that point we were suitably fresh to the idea that people could get paid big money to stand in front of a perfectly coloured wall, laughing candidly and holding a carefully placed tub of haemorrhoid cream.

Influencers were enviable, photogenic and aspirational.

We all wanted to travel the world eating icecream and appetite-suppressant lollipops. And we all tried to take Insta-worthy photos, annoying our partners, parents and fellow pedestrians as we all preened on pavements in front of that perfect pastel........
