Not all young people are change makers

3 0 0

OPINION: One of the strangest things about being in your early 20s is how much faith people have in your generation to change things.

It feels like there's a lot of dissatisfaction out there right now, whether that's over climate change, the gender pay gap or food insecurity. And in the wake of this young people have emerged as the solution to assorted social evils.

I've lost count of the times I've been told, "things are changing, you young people are much more outspoken about (insert social issue) – you won't put up with that any more!"

Sexism, homophobia, single-use plastic, queue jumping, Love Island … Name a social evil, we're gonna fix it with our superior evolved attitudes and appetite for change. It certainly makes a nice change from being told we're all sensitive sausages who're p...ing away our house deposits by eating too many smashed peas (smashed avo is like, so 2018).

* We ignore the climate-change catastrophe at our peril
* For the sake of the planet, let's not put Greta Thunberg on a pedestal
* We can be heroes, if not Avengers
* Kids know the house is burning

But the problem is that it's really not that simple …
