Forget morality - you're a shamer

5 2 1

OPINION: Not a week goes by when we don't see proof that young women are threatening the moral fabric of our nation by their penchant for satanical Spandex. As a nation we're still debating whether women who wear yoga pants in public are in fact the harbingers of the apocalypse, when along comes Yvette Harvie-Salter in her Glassons swimsuit this week.

God alive, you'd have thought she'd walked into the Albany pools in nipple tassels from the level of clutch-my-pearls moral hysteria her bikini caused other women. So much so they forced the now-infamous intervention by the female lifeguard who explained the bikini-clad Beelzebub needed to change into something more "conservative" if she wanted to continue to use the public pools. (Despite the fact she was in a private, adult-only spa with her partner.)

I wish I could say I was surprised when I heard the story. But honestly, I was just depressed. Not only is it consistent with our fondness for publicly shaming women for the way they dress. But four years ago I was in the same position, when a group of "concerned" mothers shamed me out of a public swimming pool for my "scandalous" togs that were threatening the moral purity of their (utterly uninterested) kids.
