MP exits; one loss, one gain

OPINION: The loss of one is a major blow, the loss of the other comes not a moment too soon.

That much is clear in the way National chose to honour the retirement of Finance Spokeswoman Amy Adams, compared to the unceremonious addendum allowed to typically-truant Wairarapa MP Alastair Scott.

Adams' contribution to New Zealand politics has been profound; understated, of a high calibre, and incredibly efficient - much like her personal reputation within Parliament.

Now she'll retire at the 2020 election, and has handed her portfolios of shadow finance and shadow attorney-general to Paul Goldsmith and Tim Macindoe respectively.

Both will be safe pairs of hands, and Goldsmith has risen as a well-researched and dogged Opposite marksman to the keeper of the key to unlocking regional growth - Shane Jones.
