OPINION: What the hell is happening to Auckland rugby?

All of a sudden the Auckland side is really good. And, yes, I know this sounds extraordinary, but there are signs that the Blues may finally be getting their act together.

Let's start with the Auckland team.

They beat a tough, well-drilled Canterbury side to win the Mitre 10 Cup, by being unselfish, hard-working and gutsy, words that nobody in this universe has used to describe an Auckland team for years.

A prime example? How the ball flicked through four pairs of hands to wing Caleb Clarke, so he could score the try that sent the final into extra time.

Basically it was a perfect example of the principle (one our only unbeaten All Black coach, Fred Allen, would forever hold to) that the aim of rugby is for 14 men to give a 15th man a metre's start.

As recently as last season you could have bet with certainty that one of the players who got the ball to Clarke would have seen the chance for personal glory, tried to score himself, and........
