Forget about a cycleway

OPINION: To those few kicking up a fuss and advocating a cycleway when the new road on the other side of the Manawatū Gorge is built, I say, on ya bike.

Go and talk to the competitive cyclists who avoid state highways like the plague when training and competing.

The new gorge traverse will be akin to a four-lane motorway, with SUVs and trucks and trailers going like the clappers, potentially fatal for bike riders without a massively expensive barrier and cycleway up in the Ruahine clouds.

Motorways in Auckland and the Auckland Harbour Bridge ban cyclists, for good reason, and do not have cycleways.

The call for a walkway alongside the road is equally daft. There is already an 11.2 kilometre track through the gorge, safely under the native bush canopy with birds a tweeting and no carbon monoxide fumigation. Sadly, the Ashhurst entrance road there has been recently blighted by boy racers' rubber, although the new judder bar there will........
