OPINION: To those few kicking up a fuss and advocating a cycleway when the new road on the other side of the Manawatū Gorge is built, I say, on ya bike.

Go and talk to the competitive cyclists who avoid state highways like the plague when training and competing.

The new gorge traverse will be akin to a four-lane motorway, with SUVs and trucks and trailers going like the clappers, potentially fatal for bike riders without a massively expensive barrier and cycleway up in the Ruahine clouds.

The call for a walkway alongside the road is equally daft. There is already an 11.2 kilometre track through the gorge, safely under the native bush canopy with birds a tweeting and no carbon monoxide fumigation.
