Drivers need reality check

Einstein said it and former V8 supercar star Greg Murphy posted it on his Facebook page this week, responding to the horrific deaths of eight people near Taupō last Saturday.

Murphy says the Taupō crash, one of New Zealand's worst in history, highlights that the Government's focus on fixing roads and speeds is no longer enough, we need fresh action. He's calling for drivers to re-sit their driving tests every 10 years. It sounds annoying and expensive but it's time we put the focus back on drivers.

By contrast the spray paint was barely dry at the crash investigation scene before pundit, Clive Matthew-Wilson, of Dog And Lemon fame, was wheeled out to point the finger at the Government, claiming the State had blood on its hands, and demanding median barriers the length of the country to protect motorists.

The fact is, 46 people were killed on our roads in April, 139 mothers, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives and children have been killed so far this year. Something drastic needs to change.

I've worked for NZTA in the past. I've also seen the devastated faces of not only the road safety engineers but everyone working in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty offices every time a fatality is logged on our State Highway network. These people work hard and care deeply about stopping the carnage on our State Highways.
