Twenty-five years ago, when I barely had a brass razoo to rub together, I was cold-called by a charity looking for cash to keep a women's refuge open. A specific kind of refuge – one designed to be accessible for victims of family violence who were also physically disabled.

I was shocked that a place like this needed to exist, naive enough to think difficult things happened one at a time – that you might be in a wheelchair OR you might be knocked around by a partner, but life wouldn't be so cruel as to demand you deal with both.

The cold-caller – who was actually very warm – said they didn't take credit cards, but if I wanted to write a cheque they'd send someone to pick it up from my letterbox. The first cheque I wrote was for $5, but the woman on the phone sounded hundreds-of-dollars grateful.

She'd call every six months and, whether I wrote a cheque for more than that or wasn't in a position to write a cheque at all, we had a happy chat. I wish I........
