Alabama is incubating problems for the future

OPINION: Husband-and-wife comedians and commentators Jeremy Elwood and Michele A'Court give their views.

I can't help thinking that if those 25 men in Alabama really believed that having a baby was so important, they'd want to do it themselves. That legions of medical experts would be frantically working out how to graft a uterus into men's bodies and take those foetuses away from the wicked women, and grow and protect them themselves.

Or at the very least, that we'd be a long way down the track of building incubators that could take over the job the moment a foetal heartbeat is detected. If women can't be trusted to know when they are ready to parent – or ready to parent more children than they currently have – I'm surprised they're allowed anywhere near a foetus. If this really was about protecting the sanctity of life, you'd think they'd find somewhere better to put it.

Maybe it's because, to all intents and purposes, their view of women already is that they are the incubators – nameless, dreamless, opinion-less hosts to a possible new human, whose potential future is more important than her current life.
