Donald Trump, the attention-seeker

ANALYSIS: At a social media event he held at the White House last week, US President Donald Trump fondly recalled the days when one of his tweets could electrify the country - and send his follower count soaring.

"It would be like a rocket ship when I put out a beauty," he said wistfully. "Remember when I said somebody was spying on me?"

Trump was recounting the time in March 2017 when he tweeted that his predecessor Barack Obama had illegally wire-tapped the phones at his Trump Tower offices late in the 2016 election campaign.

There was no evidence for his claim yet it dominated the news agenda for days

Nowadays, Trump complained, his tweets weren't performing as well as they used to - a fact he attributed to anti-conservative bias at the big social media companies.

Just three days later Trump logged on to Twitter and delivered one of the most inflammatory statements of his presidency - effectively telling four non-white........
