Are airport lounges worth it?

OPINION: The only reason I can fathom for the Air New Zealand lounge at Auckland International Airport getting so packed at times that eligible travellers are turned away is that most of us are essentially greedy b……. who can't say no to unlimited food and booze. Particularly if it makes us feel a cut above the hoi polloi.

Why else are so many travellers so desperate to spend those precious minutes - or even hours - before a long flight in a room akin to a large corporate canteen? With life, Auckland traffic and airport security processes being what they are, I'm lucky if I have time to grab some take-away sushi to stuff into my hand luggage before it's time to go to the gate.

And yet the lounge gets so chocca with departing passengers at times that the airline has to redirect some to the Strata lounge. Now it's taking steps to curb access, reducing the number of guests Elite members are allowed to bring in and limiting the number of eVouchers certain credit card holders can earn from August 1.

Don't get me wrong I love a good lounge as much as the next sucker who's been stuck in an airport so long they're beginning to look and feel like a transient. Stepping into a Koru lounge, as many of us still think of them, for the first time as a guest of a colleague in my early 20s felt like entering a parallel dimension for the privileged I had only half........
