Tech fomo is real

OPINION: There are a handful of companies that fear missing technology's next big thing so much they'll invest in practically anything.

Samsung and Facebook were both guilty of that this week. But I'll come to that in a bit.

First, let's explore why this fear of not innovating exists. Cast your minds back to the turn of the century and there was one technology company that was head and shoulders above the rest. Microsoft.

Here was a company with all the money and resources in the world, perfectly positioned to dominate the next big trend, whatever that might be.

* Samsung Galaxy Fold screens are breaking within days, new owners say
* Samsung's latest mid-range smartphone deserves a second look

That trend was mobile computing.

Dumb phones, smartphones, MP3 players, tablets, activity trackers, smartwatches. Microsoft managed to miss the boat on all of these in spectacular fashion.

To be fair to Microsoft, it wasn't the only brand to miss an open goal. Sony, with its Walkman dominance of the time, and cash reserves, also messed up.

Failing to recognise that hundreds of millions of consumers wanted an easy-to-use mobile device that could store and play all of their Napster........
