Florida towns pay $1.65m to hackers

OPINION: Two Florida towns have paid over US$1m (NZ$1.5m) in Bitcoin to hackers after falling victim to recent ransomware attacks.

The first attack took place in the small town of Riviera Beach in the final week of May. The town, with a modest population of 35,000, was struck by the attack after an employee clicked on a link in an email.

This was all it took to allow the hackers to upload ransomware to the council's systems. Once the malware was present, the IT system ground to a halt.

Employees could no longer access their emails and residents of the city were unable to make municipal payments........
