Kiwi caught up in Hong Kong

OPINION: There's a loud cracking sound as small round canisters come flying through the air.

They land on the ground beneath a walkway I'm sharing with hundreds of protesters, and begin spewing white smoke.

Most people run. A few die-hards run forward, seize the billowing tubes, and lob them back in the direction of police. These frontline fighters are dressed for the occasion; goggles, face masks and towels to protect from the effects of the tear gas.

The tear gas burns. It feels like a handful of crushed chillies has been smeared across my eyes. Following those around me, I run in the opposite direction.
