A printing press is a magnificent thing. In the few remaining newsrooms where a press still exists in the same building, we can sense when they start rolling — and we invariably rejoice.

Those at The Hamilton Spectator are three storeys high. A labyrinth of ladders and walkways allow access to an intricate sculpture of cylinders, gears, shafts, drivetrains, motors, plates and electronics.

Invented almost six centuries ago, the printing press changed the world. It is without a doubt one of the 10 most important inventions in human history.

But the internet is also in the Top 10, and times are changing. The Spectator is not just a newspaper — it is a news organization. We publish multimedia on multiple platforms day and night, and while print circulation is declining,........
