Paul Berton: Bringing ‘justice’ to Julian Assange could be dangerous for journalism

1 1 3

Hold on to your hats: we're in for another long and difficult debate about press freedom now that Julian Assange is back in the news.

After almost seven years holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in Britain, the Australian founder of WikiLeaks was kicked out this week and promptly jailed by local police for skipping bail in 2012.

The United States want to extradite him for hacking government secrets, but Assange's lawyer, among many others, called that "a dangerous precedent for all news media."

Is it?

For some, Assange is an international hero, a principled whistleblower and a crusading journalist.

For others, he is little more than a common thief, a Russian stooge and wacky conspiracy theorist.

I lean toward the latter........
