Margaret Shkimba: Professional competencies should prevail at Hamilton city council

1 0 0

After spending almost 40 years in the workforce, I have experienced a range of unprofessional behaviour, although not the complete gamut by any means. Some stories I've heard from colleagues would turn your toes with shock. Beginning with my very first job, and continuing throughout my career, I witnessed bad behaviour where I expected some sort of professional restraint.

I get that people get emotional and heated up. I do, too. In fact, I can rage with abandon with the best of them, I bet, but I do know when it's best not to. I know how to bite my tongue. I just shut my mouth.

I was dismayed by the reports coming from those who attend Hamilton city council meetings of Coun. Sam Merulla's side conversation with his colleague, Chad Collins, during the speaking time of Coun. Brad Clark. It wasn't only a side conversation; from the picture I saw, it looked like he just told a joke he thought was hilarious. And it's not the first time.

That kind of behaviour has always troubled me. I don't get why people think it's OK to talk when they should be listening. I was taught that in school. That's why we passed notes.

People have side conversations........
