Canada is having ‘a difficult moment’ over U.S.-China relations

While most of Canada was on a patio for the weekend, trade and finance negotiators from other countries were frantically taking stands on international relations that will affect Canada's wherewithal for years to come.

In Washington, first there was a sigh of relief on Friday night when Donald Trump said he had a deal with Mexico on migrants and would not be imposing escalating tariffs after all — a move that would have upset any hope Canada had of an orderly ratification of the new NAFTA.

But then, after the American punditry pointed out that Mexico's concessions were superficial at most, Trump reissued the threat — albeit in vaguer terms — saying he could impose tariffs at any time if Mexico gets out of line.

Meanwhile, over in Japan, finance ministers and central bankers were locked up in a room for G20 meetings, wrangling about what to do with a global economy dragged down by a devastating trade war between the United States and China. Both countries are members of the G20, and Canada has been hoping the global forum would be a place for them to work out their differences.

Not so much! At this weekend's meetings, some countries wanted........
