CALGARY – From best in the west to finished in five.

The Calgary Flames‘ improbable, 50-win season came to a crashing end Friday at the hands of a wild-card Colorado Avalanche club that played infinitely better than the Western Conference champions.

A 5-1 loss to the Avalanche capped the Flames’ second four-game losing skid of the season to bounce them from the playoffs, leaving the club to wonder where it all went wrong.

Mike Smith was solid for the fifth-straight game, holding the fort early against a trio of Avalanche juggernauts who took over the series.
