Blue Jays, Borucki look ahead as sophomore year ends in disappointment

1 14 0

TORONTO – Two starts and one surgery later, Ryan Borucki’s 2019 season is officially over.

On Thursday, the 25-year-old left-hander had surgery to remove a bone spur from the back of his pitching elbow. With that, his sophomore season ends and a rehab process begins. If all goes well, he could be throwing within six to eight weeks and ready for business as usual next spring training.

Still, it’s discouraging news for the Blue Jays considering Borucki posted a 3.87 ERA in 17 starts as a rookie last year. Instead of building on those results, he was sidelined with elbow inflammation for the first half of the year. Now he’s back on the injured list after returning for just two games.

That’s enough to test any player’s patience.

“He’s special when it comes to being a leader,” manager Charlie Montoyo said. “He’s going to be all right. Anybody would be frustrated, but I think he’ll be all right. Of all guys, he’ll be all right.”
