New political party launches in South Wales with mission to open up politics
A new political party has launched in South Wales with a mission to open up politics to everyone.
The newly formed Open Party is piloting in the super-constituency of Casnewydd Islwyn, which has been formed as part of the new election arrangements for the 2026 Senedd elections.
The constituency has a population of 160,000 voters and is a combination of Newport East, Newport West, and Islwyn.
The Open Party believes that steadily declining election turnout and growing distrust in the political system indicate that the system itself, not the parties within it, is the core issue.
A party spokesperson said: "We are fishing for our leaders in an incredibly small pool.
"There is an ocean of talent beyond the political parties, going to waste."
