TV show revisits the controversial loss of city's Chartist mural created in 1978
The demolition of Newport’s iconic Chartist mural is revisited in Vanished Wales season five, episode two, shining a light on one of the city’s most controversial cultural losses in living memory.
The ITV series explores historic landmarks across Wales that have disappeared within recent generations, and in this episode presenter Adeola Dewis turns her attention to Newport and a monumental work of public art that once stood in John Frost Square.
Created in 1978, the vast mosaic depicted the Chartist Uprising of 1839 – a defining moment in Newport’s history when thousands of working-class men marched on the town demanding democratic reform and the right to vote. The protest ended in tragedy after soldiers opened fire at the Westgate Hotel, killing at least 22 people.
The mural was designed by celebrated artist Kenneth Budd and commissioned by Newport Council as a permanent public memorial.........
