An opera inspired by a mining tragedy is to be performed in Blackwood.

Gresford - Up From Underground, which tells the story of the 1934 Gresford Colliery disaster in Wales, will be performed at Blackwood Miners' Institute on February 26 at 7.30pm.

The disaster claimed the lives of 266 men and boys in one of Wales’ deadliest mining disasters.

Gillian Davies, 72, whose father Ivor Owen Bellis narrowly escaped the tragedy, said the opera was a powerful way to remember those lost.

Mrs Davies said: "I'm very excited to take part in the tour because I am a Wrexham girl, born and bred.
