OVER the past week, social media in Newport has been awash with speculation about the town’s Mercure Hotel, including false claims that it is housing asylum seekers.

These rumours, gaining traction across local Facebook groups and comment threads, echo similar misinformation that has circulated about other hotels, including some as nearby as Bristol.
