Why so many San Francisco 49ers executives live in this quiet Bay Area suburb

Five days to go before the San Francisco 49ers play the Philadelphia Eagles in a win or head home playoff matchup but nothing about downtown Los Altos on Tuesday seemed to capitalize on the town’s unique connection to the Bay Area’s only NFL team. No flag decals hung outside businesses or locals passing by in gold satin jackets. With the exception of an older woman in a 49ers hat chatting on the phone outside a cafe, the team was nearly nonexistent in the affluent community — surprising, since it’s the chosen home for so much of its leadership.

Los Altos, along with its suburban sibling Los Altos Hills, is where the team’s owner, president and head coach all currently reside.

The leafy hamlet in the Peninsula foothills has a long history with the team. Quarterback Brock Purdy previously rented a home in Los Altos (and is now in the process of joining its country club) as did former quarterbacks Steve Young and John Brodie. Two bygone coaches — Steve Mariucci and George Seiffert — called the area home, too.
