Nima Momeni, the man convicted of murdering Cash App founder Bob Lee in April 2023, is suing several media outlets, including the Los Angeles Times and San Francisco Standard, over defamation and negligence claims. 

Momeni, who is representing himself in the civil lawsuit filed Monday in the Superior Court of San Francisco, is seeking $17 million in damages. Momeni also names NYP Holdings Inc., the publisher of the New York Post; Paul Kuroda, a photographer whose photos of the trial the Standard published; and up to 100 unnamed defendants.

Momeni is accusing the media outlets of defamation, breach of contract, professional negligence, civil rights violations, intentional and negligent emotional distress, fraud, and invasion of privacy, court documents show. He’s also alleging that he suffered wage loss, loss of use of property, general damage, loss of earning capacity and other damage, according to the complaint.

Shannan Dugan, a San Francisco criminal defense attorney who attended Momeni’s trial last year, told SFGATE that the lawsuit may have some procedural challenges because civil cases like Momeni’s require a “labor intensive process,” which is usually done by attorneys.
