Snowmobilers trigger huge California avalanche, burying one

The aftermath of an avalanche that Mono County officials said was triggered by snowmobilers on Dec. 27, 2025.

A group of snowmobilers triggered an avalanche in a recreation area north of Yosemite National Park, burying one person, search and rescue teams said. 

Around 11 a.m. Saturday, the Mono County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue team received a call for a D3 avalanche near Latopie Lake. A D3 avalanche is considered “very large,” enough to wipe out a house and create a debris field 10 football fields long.
